Bone Density Measurements: Multi-Slice Computed Tomography versus Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Abstract


Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the bone density values obtained by using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) vs. cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Methods: A dry mandible was scanned with MSCT (Hounsfield unit; HU) and 3 types of CBCTs (voxel value; VV). Bone densities (gray scales) in the scanned images were measured and compared using 3-dimensional software programs. The cortical, cancellous and total bone densities of the alveolar bone between the mandibular second premolar and first molar were measured on an axial slice at the height of 3, 6, and 9 mm apically from the alveolar crest.

Results: There was no statistical difference in bone density between the right and left sides. The cortical bone density measurements were significantly different with MSCT vs. CBCT (P<0.05), but there were no significant differences in cancellous and total bone density measurements with MSCT vs. CBCT (P>0.05). The bone density values showed linear relationships in the MSCT and CBCT images.

Conclusions: Bone density values were different but showed linear relationships in MSCT and CBCT images. Therefore, CBCT could be a valuable tool for evaluating bone density on a relative basis.
